Subject: IMAP Configuration - Also used with the iphone
The following message was sent by our staff regarding the above subject:
Hello,
E-mail clients using IMAP generally leave messages on the server until the user explicitly deletes them. This and other characteristics of IMAP operation allow multiple email clients and devices to manage the same mailbox.
IMAP is only for receiving mail. Sending mail uses POP3.
No additional settings or changes are required in your hosting control panel to use IMAP.
When configuring your mail client for IMAP, please note the following settings - There are two parts required to receive and send.
1) The IMAP hostname (incoming server) is mail.yourdomain.com (where yourdomain.com is your actual domain name)
2) IMAP runs on port 143
3) ROOT folder is "INBOX" (without quotes)
-- for iOS the root is called "IMAP Path Prefix"
-- for Outlook (More Settings/Advanced) the root is called "Root folder path:"
4) SSL for IMAP for receiving is supported on port 993*.
5) Outgoing server (SMTP) will be setup as POP3 (shown below).
--------------- POP3 -----------------
Outgoing server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com
User Name: (your FULL email address i.e. you@yourdomain.com)
Password: Your email password is case sensitive as are all of the above.
Make sure to enable SMTP Authentication. (Note: this is NOT the same as "Secure Password Authentication" (SPA) or "Authenticated POP" (APOP)).
*For Outlook under More Settings/Outgoing Server:
You should have a check mark next to: "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".
You should have the dot on: "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"
*For Mac Mail - Authentication: None (check Allow insecure authentication if present)
Outgoing mail server port should be: 587, 2525, or 25
Note: Standard outgoing SMTP port is 25, however many ISPs are now blocking this port in an attempt to stop automatic 'spam machines'.
To use SSL* for POP 3 replace settings above with the information below:
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) port: 465
Type: SSL
Server timeout should be at least 1 minute.
*Upon connection, you may also have to accept our self-signed certificate from 4admin.com. This is perfectly safe to do.
Alternatively, please change your mail servers to xx.webmasters.com (where xx is your server number, i.e. 13.webmasters.com) in your email client as we are now securing all *.webmasters.com domains with SSL.
Note: Folders created and subscribed to through mail clients will -not- populate inside of Webmail. In other words, all extra IMAP folders must first be created inside of Webmail by going to http://mail.yourdomain.com
Here is some extra information::
We use: Courier-IMAP Version: 3.0.8 Custom (SSL Enabled). The documentation for which is here: http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/
The IMAP executable path on our servers is /usr/sbin/imapd.
Information for Outlook users:
--In Outlook, your IMAP folders are a mirror of what is on the mail server. Whatever you copied into your IMAP folders in Outlook should have been sync'd to the server. You can use the webmail interface to verify that.
--If you were to delete and re-create the IMAP account in Outlook, the folders should be populated with what is on the server. Outlook would not automatically import anything from your local folders.
--If you set up your account using the IMAP protocol, numerous folders will sync. Outlook lets you choose which folders sync in the IMAP Folders dialog. You should able to control the Send/Receive schedule for any kind of mailbox, POP, IMAP, or Exchange. I believe they all use the same Send/Receive Group dialog. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/choose-which-imap-account-folders-appear-in-outlook-HP010355590.aspx
